Our Amazing Staff

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

So, Darn Knit Anyway is a year old.   I thought it might be time to formally introduce our amazing staff.  Carly and I could not do it alone and Krishell, Shelly, Amy B, Lynn and Krisha help make “the lodge” what it is.
.

The Crew...Carly, Krishell, Aimee, Shelly, Lynn and Krisha

.
Over a year ago, I contacted Krishell on Ravelry.  I found out, through Ravelry, that she lived in Stillwater.  I sent her a message telling her I was thinking about opening a yarn shop in town and did she think it was a good idea.  After she stopped hyperventilating, she sent me a message back saying…”um…yeah!”  I met with her shortly after I got the keys to the shop and we hit it off right away.  She has been with us from the start…well, before the start really:)  Krishell is married and has 2 little kids.  Her ravelry user name is blustarr.  She moderates our Ravelry page and is also our resident crochet expert! You’ll find a crochet class or two on the schedule with Krishell’s name on it!
.

Shelly lives in Lakeland and has been with us from opening day too! She was driving through town as we were setting up shop and wandered in.  We loved her from the start and offered her a job right away.  Shelly handles our Monday open knit session from 1-3 and almost always works in the shop on Sundays.  Shelly loves socks and baby stuff and teaches classes for us too!  Shelly is married and has raised three kids!  She lives with her super cute husband and some dogs!  I think Shelly has a ravelry user name, but I don’t think she ever uses it:)
.

Amy B…what can we say about our Amy B.
.

Amy B

.
Amy is my husband’s first cousin.  They grew up together, camping and carrying on.  When I was thinking about opening the yarn shop, I called her and told her what I was thinking.  She screamed into the phone….YEEEESSSS!!!!!  Amy runs our Thursday night open knit sessions.  Her ravelry user name is ajballew.   Everyone who meets her loves her!  She is a great knitter and even better listener.  She is a breath of fresh air!  She loves a certain ice cream coffee drink from the Daily Grind, in case you were going to get her a little somethin somethin!
.

There are a few other people that we call “friends of the shop” that I must mention.
.

Lynn wandered into open knit one night and we wouldn’t let her leave.  She works on occasion, when she wants an evening or weekend day off from the kids!  We love having her!  Lynn has a “real” job that is “real” important and I think the crazy that is DKA is good for her!
.

Krisha lives in Stillwater too.  She is a good friend of Krishell.  Sometime, you’ll need to ask them how they met.  They LOVE to tell that story:) Her user name on Ravelry is greatbiglove but, don’t let her lack of projects posted fool you.  She is a speedy, excellent knitter that is our “go to” girl.  She can whip out a project in a matter of days…no matter what!  Many of the beautiful garments in our shop were knitted by our friend Krisha!
.

There are many other folks that we adore that come and hang out or help sticker or help finish a bottle of wine.  You know who you are and we are THRILLED that you stick around!
.

We couldn’t have gotten through our first year without the help of these great people.
.

We have so much gratitude…

What We’ve Learned

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

We made it.  We “survived” our first year.  Wow.  What a year it has been.
.

Someone asked me recently what my biggest mistake was this past year.  I told them that I had no idea.  I really don’t have any idea.  For that matter, I don’t know what my biggest accomplishment is either.   It’s all a crazy blur.
.

It’s a lot like the first year of your child’s life.  You know that what you did was great, I mean you gave birth to a new life after all.  You know that you made mistakes.  You put your months old daughter in the front hall bathroom, in her bouncy chair, with the fan on and the door closed because it was the ONLY place she didn’t cry.  If you’re like me, you forget the day to day things…what she ate, when she slept, when you turned her car seat to forward facing, when she ate solid foods.  You know what I mean.  I will probably remember this year with fondness, but the edges will be fuzzy.
.

We learned a lot about yarn shops this year, some things I am sure are universal, and others are special to our little yarn shop!
.
.
For example…
.

We just can’t seem to keep our space under the counter clean.  No matter how hard we try.  Hopefully, you will find this endearing:)
.

Counter Mess

.
We get ridiculous dust bunnies.  We mean ridiculous!  This one is nothin.
.

Dust Bunny

.
We need to move stuff in the windows around…a lot.  Our sunny location is great for us, not so great for our garments!
.

Sun is good AND bad

.
We don’t have nearly enough storage.  I am sure it is a matter of not enough storage and not a matter of not wanting to throw anything away.
.

We might have a hoarding problem...

.

Size 7 double point needles fly off the shelves.  Can’t keep them in stock
.

double point dilemma

.

Our best selling yarn is Cascade 220 Superwash color Turtle.  Wow.  We have sold more of this yarn in this color than ANY other yarn.
.

Best Selling Yarn...

.

Our best selling fabric, for sure, are the pin ups.  Lots of aprons and pillow cases were made with this fabric this year!
.

Pin ups...great!

.
We LOVE our neighbors…we have a great group of businesses here in the Brick Alley!  One business we frequent a bit more than the others though.  We have had too much to eat (and drink) at our neighbors, Smalley’s BBQ.  Seriously, the loaded mac and cheese can’t be beat.  And, if you happen to get there for happy hour, you MUST try the totchos.  Nachos, with tater tots instead of tortilla chips.  Yep.  Crazy.
.

Smalleys BBQ

.
See it, right there…Mac and Cheddar.  Trust us…the chilies and bacon are NOT optional!
.

Mac and Cheddar

.

Don’t get me started on the parking…ahhhhhh the parking!!  We LOVE that parking is free in the gigantic lot right next to our building all winter long!!!
.
We love what we do at Darn Knit Anyway.  We are proud of the shop we have created and we are full of gratitude that you all love it too.
.

Imagine what we’ll learn next year!

Our Amazing Location

We are located at 423 South Main Street in Stillwater, MN in a building called the Brick Alley.  The building is the first building you see when you pull into Stillwater from Hwy 36.  The photo here is a computer generated illustration of what our signage will look like.  The real signs are getting installed on Sunday.

We are shooting for a grand opening the weekend of October 10th.  But if our door is open, come on in and check us out!

Our amazing graphic designer crafted this cool image.  Check out Katrina Haas work at www.themixcreative.com.
