My Cousin Carly

Friday, January 20th, 2012

.
By now you must know that Carly and I are cousins.  We are 10 months apart in age.
.
This picture was of us on some family trip somewhere.  I’m the blond.
.

Aimee and Carly Hippies

We have so many pictures of Carly and me together that we started putting them all on our bulletin board at the shop.  It has become a family joke really.

Halloween UW Madison 1993 maybe?

.

Already gorgeous, gorgeous!

When I decided to open a yarn shop, I told Carly about it.  I remember the moment exactly.  We were in our Nanny Jean’s  apartment visiting and I just blurted it out.  “Hey, I am going to open a yarn shop, what do you think?  Wanna run it with me?” I think her exact words were. “ok, um, sure Aim” .  I was reassured.  She was in!
.
Our Nan said  “well, you’re definitely going to need a comfortable chair.  People like comfortable chairs”.   Words of wisdom certainly.
.

.
Technically, I am the only one who owns the yarn shop.  My husband and I are the ones on the financial hook for sure.  But Darn Knit Anyway is as much Carly’s as it is mine.  I couldn’t or wouldn’t even want to run the shop without her.   I know that she loves the shop just as much as I do.  I feel that deep down in my belly.
.
Now, Carly isn’t just a great mom, cousin and knitting problem helper.  Nope she is an artist too.  A graduate of the College of Visual Arts.  She is a fashion designer and fiber artist.  Here are a few cool things she has done.  She has made garments out of everything, dollar bills, snow cone cups, rubber bands, vending machine clear container thingies, baby bottle liners

Now we are lucky enough to have a Carly Stipe original in our shop.  Right in our very own front window.  I am so happy I can hardly stand it.

.

I love my cousin to pieces.  Seriously.  Don’t know what I would do without her.
.
I know that our little shop is better because she is a part of it.  I tell her that a lot.  I just thought maybe you guys should know it too.
.
Love you cuz.

Call to Artists

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Call to Artists!
We are Darn Knit Anyway; a yarn and fabric shop coming in October to Main Street in Stillwater, Minnesota.  Our Goal is to provide an environment that makes artists and novices alike feel welcome, educated, equal and eager to come back!
In addition to being a source for unique textiles and natural, hand-dyed and locally spun yarns, we will have a boutique filled with items handmade by local artists.
Who we are looking for
Because we are going to be a boutique that only sells items made by local artists, you must currently reside in Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Oh, and you need to be at least 18.
What we are looking for
Because we are a yarn and fabric shop, we are looking for items that relate to those materials.  So, if you make something with yarn or fabric or make something to do with creating things with yarn and fabric, we want to see it!  So…knit and crochet items, baby clothes and blankets, burp cloths and bags, fiber supplies like specialty needles and notions.  You get the picture, right?
How we want it
Because we have limited time before our October opening, we need to have all correspondence in email form.  There is no application form.  Please send us an email with the following information to artist@darnknitanyway.com.
1.  We need to know who you are, how to contact you and where you call home.
2.  We need to know what item or items you are submitting, what materials you are using and what your process is.
3.  We need to see what you’ve got up your sleeve.  So, please submit up to 5 digital images per item.

When we want it
Because we are opening in early October, we are moving fast!  Submissions are due Monday, September 7th.  If you are selected for review, you will be notified via phone to set up an artist meeting (to review your art and our contract) by Friday, September 11th.  All artist meetings will be Tuesday, September 15th through Saturday, September 19th.  If selected for consignment, items need to arrive at the shop ready to sell by Tuesday, September 29th.
What we really want you to know
Our mission, for the boutique at Darn Knit Anyway, is to be a place that showcases local artists.  We want you to tag your items with any contact information you see fit.  We want people to be able to find you directly and buy more from you!  We’ll be profiling our artists on our website with links to your website.  So, feel free to send us a great bio and website information, your etsy site and any other information you think makes you and your product really cool.  We are excited to see what unique items you have to show us!
