If You Knit it He Will Come

Sunday, May 5th, 2013

.
Carly’s friend is in her 30s and single.
.
She has decided that she is going to knit a sweater for a man that she doesn’t have in her life yet.  Thinking, if she knits it he will come.
.
This might seem like a crazy idea to you, but I believe in this.   This is exactly what I think she should do.  I am all in.
.
It’s much like a prayer shawl.  The idea is that you knit or crochet something for someone who needs healing.  You spend your time thinking great calming, healing thoughts and then the person who gets the shawl wears it and feels your love.  The good vibes go out into the vast universe and then come billowing down on the person you knit for.  It brings them peace.
.
So, why wouldn’t this work the same way?  What you put out there, you bring back to you.  It’s the law of attraction right?
.
If its good enough for Oprah…
.
I did something kind of like this many years ago.   I wrote a list of what I wanted in my ideal guy.
.
Most of my friends were already married and having babies.  I was in my late 20s and was ready to be married too.  I was talking to my friend Earl and he asked me what I wanted in a man.  I told him some very vague attributes like…funny, happy, smart…those sorts of things.  Earl said I needed to be more specific.  Like really specific.  He said if you are specific then you won’t waste your time on men that don’t fit your list.    If you write this list, when your perfect man shows up, you’ll recognize him.
.

This is how my life partner list read.
.

-likes to laugh
-adores me (opens doors, gives me flowers, surprised me, romances me)
-approaches all things with a positive attitude
-respects marriage
-treats people with respect…especially his family
-5’10 or taller, shouldn’t be thinner than me
-comfortable at a formal ball or corner bar
-likes to travel and explore
-can run a power tool when needed
-wants to be a father
-enjoys a beer or two
-believes in a higher power (Catholic would be cool)
-successful enough in business to have lots of time to play
-money to play with would be nice too
-nonsmoker
-physically active (no couch potato)
.

From then on, each time someone asked me why I was still single, I would pass them this list.  I would say “I haven’t found this guy yet, do you know him?”
.
I met Jason about a year later. It was New Year’s Eve at O’Garas pub (corner bar – check).  He asked me to dance (surprised me – check).  I had to look up to see into his eyes  (5’10 or taller – check).   It went on like this…checking off things on my list until he asked me to marry him a year later.
.

Pelletiers

.
10 years, 2 kids, 1 dog, 1 cat and 1 yarn store later the list didn’t fail me.
.
So, I absolutely believe, if you knit it he will come.
.
I am all in!
.
A little side note here…if you are interested in writing your own life partner list check out Earl’s book Finding Love on Purpose Write your own list and shoot me a copy.

We Finished a Sweater Today

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

.
We finished a sweater today.
.

Nancy's Kimono

.
We finish a lot of sweaters in this shop.
.
This one was special though.
.
Our customer and friend Nancy passed away a few months ago and she was so close to finishing this sweater.
.
We were lucky enough to be able to finish it for her.  For her daughter.
.
Carly sewed up all the pieces, I picked up and knit the collar.
.
We thought about blocking it, but decided against it.
.
We thought her daughter might still want it to smell like her mom.
.
Her daughter came in to pick it up and sure enough, she put it right up to her nose.  Sweet.
.

A Gift for Nancy

.
We finished a sweater today.   Our gift to Nancy.
.
We are more than a yarn store and we like it that way.

.
Found these glasses today while cleaning out my car.  I have no idea to whom they belong.
.
It’s been a long winter.
.
My husband has always said I could survive for 2 weeks using just things found in my car.
.
I think he might be right.

.
It’s time for another dressing of the tree in our patio.

We’ve done it a few times now…here and here

.
This time we need your help.
.
We are going to fill the tree with butterflies!
.
So…
.
We need bright, colorful rectangles knit in garter out of whatever bright colored yarn you might have around.  We’ll do the assembly, we just need your rectangles!
.

12-14" wide

.

6-8" tall

.

Butterfly Assembled

.
We’d love to bomb the tree on Tuesday, April 9th.  So if we could get your rectangles by Monday night or Tuesday morning we’d be able to assemble them and hang ‘em up!
.
We hope you’ll help us!

Shop Hop 2013

.
We are soooo excited to be participating again in the Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop!
.
New to the Shop Hop?  It’s pretty simple really.  Twin Cities area yarn stores are partnering to help fill food shelves around the metro and you can help!
.
Visit 16 amazingly terrific yarn shops in the greater Twin Cities area over 4 days.  Each shop has commissioned a hand dyed yarn specific to their shop, available for purchase, and just for walking into the shop you get a free pattern featuring that yarn.  Check out our beautiful yarn from last year.   Our theme this year is the St. Croix River.  Wait until you see the yarn and pattern for this year!
.
Make a donation to the food shelf and you get a free charm.  Last year visitors to our stores helped us donate 5,700 pounds of food and supplies and over $5000 in cash to many different food shelf partner.  We hope to exceed that this year!
.

Shop Hop 2013 Charming Possibilities

.
There are also lots of chances to win prizes.  Just for walking into a shop, you get your name entered into a prize drawing for that day.  Each shop will draw 3 names a day!  Make it to all 16 shops in the 4 days of the hop and you get entered into the grand prize.  This prize is HUGE.  It is full of yarn, needles, books and notions and last year was valued at over $2,000.  WHAT?  There is also a first prize winner selected for each shop from the finishers.  Like I said…lots of ways to win.

Think you might want to join us?  Click here for more details.
.
We hope to see you April 11th – 14th.  We LOVE the shop hop and we hope you do too!

If you feel like you’re choking, you’re doing it right

I Am...Yoga

I’ve now successfully managed to do 2 yoga classes at my gym.
.
Yoga is new to me.  I am not a relaxed, calm person.  I run at a high level and I wasn’t really sure I could be still enough to do yoga.  But you know what?  Yoga isn’t necessarily about being still.  AND Yoga isn’t easy.  Nope, it’s not.
.
We do “I Am…Yoga” at our gym.  Developed by our instructor Cary.  Here is the description.

.

“By combining the best of yoga stretching exercises, breathing exercises, and visualization techniques, I am..Yoga™ is a self healing program of exercise that when practiced regularly reduces stress, releases muscular tension, balances the vital life forces of the body, eliminates toxins, and stimulates the body to heal itself. The visualization exercises practiced in I am…Yoga™ help to create a positive vision for your future and allow you to open more fully to your true purpose in life.”
.
All of that sounds terrificly terrific right?   Who doesn’t want to balance the vital life forces of the body?
.
Me, me, I do!
.
What I have learned, in the very vast knowledge I have gleaned from 2 classes of yoga is this…
.
I can not seem to breathe deeply.  Have you breathed deeply lately?  Like really deeply.  It’s not easy if you aren’t used to it.  Try it.  Go on.  Breathe in for a slow 6 counts, your belly should expand, like below the ribcage, and then blow out your breath through your mouth for 6 seconds, your belly button should pull in toward your spine.  She said that during our normal day to day stuff, we only use 10 percent of our lung capacity.  I believe it.
.
I am not flexible yet.  I am not sure why I think I would be after 6 months of inactivity.  But, I can not put my head to my knee, my head to the mat, my head to my shoulder, my head to my shins.   Apparently, putting my head to things is going to be really important.  My head flexibility has never been challenged.  That is about to change.
.
I also learned that there is one pose…don’t know what it is called…that if you feel like you are choking, you are doing it right.  I guess it stimulates the thyroid.  Then, while you are doing it right and feeling like you are choking, you are supposed to relax into the pose.  Humm…gonna need a few more classes to get that one down.
.
I like the class and I love how she says good bye to us. She says.
.
Let the blessings be.  Let the blessings be.
.
I can put my head into that one!|
.

Our Amazing Carly

.
If we’re lucky, we get to turn 40.
.
This time it’s Carly’s turn.
.
So, in typical DKA fashion, we are having a party!
.
Coffee and donuts for our lovely birthday girl.  Oh and a sale too.
.
We’re doing a grab bag of discounts from 10am – 1pm.  Pick your discount from a grab bag…they’ll range from 15% to 40%.  Again, this discount deal is only from 10 – 1!
.
We’ll also have 40% off great sale stuff in the classroom and 40% off ALL fabric ALL day.   Yep!  Spring cleaning has begun.
.
So, we’ll see you on Saturday, March 30th.  If you wish to wish Carly a happy birthday in person, and why the heck wouldn’t you, you’ll have to make it to us between 10 and 1.  Cause we’re making her work on her Big Day!
.
Plus…that’s when the donuts will be freshest.
.
New to DKA and don’t really know much about Carly yet…she’s been here since the beginning…read here!
