If You Knit it He Will Come

Sunday, May 5th, 2013

.
Carly’s friend is in her 30s and single.
.
She has decided that she is going to knit a sweater for a man that she doesn’t have in her life yet.  Thinking, if she knits it he will come.
.
This might seem like a crazy idea to you, but I believe in this.   This is exactly what I think she should do.  I am all in.
.
It’s much like a prayer shawl.  The idea is that you knit or crochet something for someone who needs healing.  You spend your time thinking great calming, healing thoughts and then the person who gets the shawl wears it and feels your love.  The good vibes go out into the vast universe and then come billowing down on the person you knit for.  It brings them peace.
.
So, why wouldn’t this work the same way?  What you put out there, you bring back to you.  It’s the law of attraction right?
.
If its good enough for Oprah…
.
I did something kind of like this many years ago.   I wrote a list of what I wanted in my ideal guy.
.
Most of my friends were already married and having babies.  I was in my late 20s and was ready to be married too.  I was talking to my friend Earl and he asked me what I wanted in a man.  I told him some very vague attributes like…funny, happy, smart…those sorts of things.  Earl said I needed to be more specific.  Like really specific.  He said if you are specific then you won’t waste your time on men that don’t fit your list.    If you write this list, when your perfect man shows up, you’ll recognize him.
.

This is how my life partner list read.
.

-likes to laugh
-adores me (opens doors, gives me flowers, surprised me, romances me)
-approaches all things with a positive attitude
-respects marriage
-treats people with respect…especially his family
-5’10 or taller, shouldn’t be thinner than me
-comfortable at a formal ball or corner bar
-likes to travel and explore
-can run a power tool when needed
-wants to be a father
-enjoys a beer or two
-believes in a higher power (Catholic would be cool)
-successful enough in business to have lots of time to play
-money to play with would be nice too
-nonsmoker
-physically active (no couch potato)
.

From then on, each time someone asked me why I was still single, I would pass them this list.  I would say “I haven’t found this guy yet, do you know him?”
.
I met Jason about a year later. It was New Year’s Eve at O’Garas pub (corner bar – check).  He asked me to dance (surprised me – check).  I had to look up to see into his eyes  (5’10 or taller – check).   It went on like this…checking off things on my list until he asked me to marry him a year later.
.

Pelletiers

.
10 years, 2 kids, 1 dog, 1 cat and 1 yarn store later the list didn’t fail me.
.
So, I absolutely believe, if you knit it he will come.
.
I am all in!
.
A little side note here…if you are interested in writing your own life partner list check out Earl’s book Finding Love on Purpose Write your own list and shoot me a copy.

March Sweater Week…It’s DONE!

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

.
It’s done!
.

.
Carly’s March sweater is done and beautiful.  She’s had it done for a while now…I’m just finally getting around to posting about it.  The back is amazing…you should see the hood!  I”ll post more pics soon.

.
She’s pretty protective of her sweater.  She won’t leave it at the shop yet for others to admire.  So to catch a glimpse of it, in person, in the wild you’ll have to be fast.
.
Well done Carly!

Read this if you are NOT a knitter

Thanks Aunt Martha

Pssst.
.
Pssst.
.
You…non knitter/crocheter/crafter…
.
Yes, you…I know you aren’t a knitter or crocheter, but you probably know someone who is.
.
I need you to read this.
.
A few years ago we taught a really sweet Stillwater lady to knit.  She wanted to learn so she could make her grand kids gifts for the holidays.  She took our beginning knit class and then kept coming back every week just knitting in our lounge.  She spent a lot of time thinking about her grand kids.  What things they might want to wear, what colors they loved, what sizes they were.  She spent a lot of time telling us all about her family.  It was sweet.
.
She came in a few months after the new year and just wasn’t herself.  She came to the front desk and asked me if she could get money back from a gift card.  She didn’t want to use it.  I asked her if we had done something to upset her.  She assured me that it wasn’t us, she just wasn’t going to knit anymore.
.
I asked her why and she said this.  Get ready for it.
.
She said that she was house sitting for her daughter and she found the scarves she knit for her grand kids for Christmas in the “going to goodwill” donation bag in the entryway.  GASP.
.
Now, I know as a non knitter/crocheter  you are thinking, so what?  Maybe it was scratchy, maybe it wasn’t her color, maybe she just didn’t like it.
.
Well, as a knitter/crocheter  I say WHAT?  Do you have any idea how much love and energy was put into that garment for you?  Do you have any idea how many hours your grandmother spent thinking about you, talking about you, making something she thought you would like?  I am pretty sure she didn’t know, or she wouldn’t have put that scarf in the goodwill donation box.   Actually, I am not pretty sure, I am absolutely sure.
.
Over the last few months another women has been coming in to get help knitting a sweater.  She has tried a few times without success to find the perfect sweater to knit for her daughter.  She finally thought she fell into the perfect one.
.
She was coming in each week with questions and was doing great on this sweater and was a third of the way done.  Well, one day she came in looking defeated.  She wanted to return the yarn.  I asked what happened?  She said that her daughter didn’t like the color.  WHAT??  If the daughter only knew.  Only knew how hard the mom was working to make something the daughter liked.  Only knew how many hours she spent picking the perfect sweater and color.  Only knew how many hours she had been knitting thinking about her.   I am pretty sure if she knew just how much time her mom has spent she wouldn’t have told her she didn’t like the color.  Actually, I am absolutely sure.
.
So, my advice to non knitters/crocheters.  Be grateful.
.
If you live out of town and you get something handmade for your brand new baby in the mail.  For goodness sake, put the kid in it and snap a quick cell phone pic.  Email or text it to us.  We don’t need much.  Just a little acknowledgement.  If you only knew how much time we spent thinking about your newborn baby while we planned, bought and then knit that sweet little gift.   The gift is a labor of love!
.
If your mom or grandmother knit you something and you don’t really like it.  Maybe it itches or isn’t your color or just doesn’t really fit.  Fake it.  You mom or grandmother spent a lot of time thinking about you while they knit that gift.  Just wear it occasionally around them or make up a story that you left it at the office or something.  When you are done with it, put it in a plastic bin in the basement storage room.
.
And by all means, and this is very important,  if you must get rid of it don’t put it in the “going to goodwill” donation bag in your front entry way.  Especially when the knitter has volunteered to house sit your home while you are in Hawaii.

The Training Room

I’ve started working out again.  I’m 3 days into week 2.  Let me just say the first week wasn’t pretty.
.
I live in Somerset, WI and I go to a great little gym in my town called The Training Room.  It’s connected to an OSI (which I went to when I had the little neck problem)  Love it there.  It is not overwhelming.  The staff is welcoming and positive and they remember my name, even after my latest 6+ month absence.   You can get such great personal attention at this gym.  So much so that my trainer (from a boot camp a while back) emailed me when he hadn’t seen me in a few months.
.

“Hi Aimee…It’s Jeremy…haven’t seen you around the gym the last few months, hope to see you back soon.”

.
I didn’t respond.  I was certainly impressed that I got a personal note, but felt bad that I hadn’t been there for so long.  The couple months, led to 6+ months.  I actually don’t even remember when my last workout was.
.
Anyway, I decided last Monday morning that I was going to the gym.  I was going to a class.
.
I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes watching other women walk in looking like they hadn’t spent the last 6 months eating Candyland Chicago Mix.  I got up the courage and headed in.
.
Who is at the front desk when I walk in the door?  Jeremy.  Of course.
.
“Hi Jeremy…remember me?”
“Of course I do Aimee.  Nice to see you.  Welcome back.”
.
That was it.  I was back.  Well, I wasn’t exactly back in.  I had pulled the membership card thing, that was usually attached to my key ring, off a few months ago. Just looking at it hanging there unused made me feel guilty.  I thought out of site, out of mind:)  Anyway, he made me a new one and off I went.

.
I introduced myself to the instructor, feeling like I was going to confession.  “It has been 6 months since my last confession…I mean workout” .  I informed her that my goal for the class was not to vomit.  She laughed, but I was totally serious!
.
The class was Tabata.   Here is the description from the website.
.
“A protocol of high intensity interval training to tax the systems of the body. Each segment is broken down into 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times for total of 4 minutes. If you enjoy a challenge, this is a great class! ”
.
What the heck was I thinking? Really?  My first time back into the gym in half a year and this is what I think I can do.  Do I really want to tax the systems of the body on the first day?   I did succeed in holding down my breakfast.  Barely.  But my legs were shaking after segment 2:)  I did leave feeling like I had done it.  The first class back.
.
I could barely get out of bed on day 2.  It felt like I had been stabbed in the thighs.  Literally.   I went back to the gym on day 2, walked the treadmill.  I spent the rest of the day grunting and groaning with every movement.  The walk down the ramps to the restroom at the shop just about sent me over the edge.
.
Day 3 I decided to do the yoga class (more on that in another blog post).  I was getting the kids ready for school and I told Max I was going to the gym again.  “Do you think that’s such a good idea mom?”  Out of the mouths of babes.
.
Now we are a week and 3 days into my new working out way of life.  So far, so good.
.
Jeremy still seems happy (and frankly shocked) to see me each morning!
.
I’m not sure why I feel the need to share this personal information except that they say telling people your goals makes you more accountable.  We’ll see:)

March Week 1

February 28th 11pm

.
Oh, she was ready.  She wasn’t going to let a little thing like sleep get in her way.  11pm came and she was ready.
.
Except that she did let sleep get in her way.  Midnight came and she was asleep.
.
Carly took the bulls by the horns on March 1st though and cast on.
.
She cast on with 5′s as she should, and got started.
.
She was supposed to switch to US7 needles but…oops…she ended up on US6 needles instead.
.
She pressed on.
.

March Sweater Week 1

.
She alternated skeins (see here for details).  Going the extra mile for this beauty.  Knit out of Madelinetosh Vintage color Terrarium.
.
Follow Carly’s progress on Ravelry here.   She actually is posting about this project.  A milestone:)

See there...right below my...

.
We all love hand dyed and hand painted yarns.  All of us.
.
We have all heard about buying enough yarn for your project at the start.  Make sure your dye lots match.  Even if you are purchasing yarn from Cascade, Berroco or Rowan.  Just because they are a big company doesn’t mean they are immune from dye lots changes.
.
Now, hand dyed yarns are different.  There usually are not dye lots.  So, if you are going to make a sweater out of hand dyed yarns you’ll need to take some extra measures to ensure that you don’t have the same problem I had with the February Sweater above.
.
My 3 skeins of Dream in Color Classy color Black Parade, looked exactly the same to me.  I rolled one up and started knitting.  I held off the sleeves and got a few inches more in with the first skein.  Started the second skein and kept right on knitting.  Not noticing at all that the second skein was just a bit off color from the first.  I knit until that skein was gone and then started my third skein, finishing the sweater.
.
I blocked it and then hung it up at the shop.  Not noticing the line below the garter stitch section at all until it was hung on the hanger.  Now it is all I see.
.
Lesson learned.  Alternate skeins.
.
So here is how it works.  It’s easy really…you just need to knit with different skeins every two rows or rounds.  You’ll carry the yarn up the side of the garment, so you won’t have extra ends to weave in.
.

Here is one way to do it…
.
So, lets say you are knitting stockinette stitch.  You’ll cast on and start knitting with skein 1.   For my example I am using 2 colors of Malabrigo Chunky.

.
I knit a bit with skein 1, but you should probably cast on and work the first couple of rows only.  Then I drop skein 1 and start working with skein 2.  There are lots of techniques to adding in a new yarn, whether you are changing colors or simply starting another skein of the same color.   I just simply start working the new yarn.  I don’t tie it up or knot it or knit it together with anything else.  I just start knitting.  The end stitches will be loose for a few rows but as long as you left a 6″ tail, you can go back and weave the ends in later.
.

Add a new yarn

.
So, then I knit a row and purled a row with yarn 2 (the green yarn).
.

Old yarn in front, new yarn in back

.
When you are at the end of your row and back to where yarn 1 is, drop yarn 2 IN FRONT and pick up yarn 1 again.
.

Alternated Skeins

.
I think I could have blended the yarn too, I think the big problem with the sweater is the definite line.  I could have started alternating 15 or 20 rows from the end of the ball.  Then it would have been a softer transition to the 2nd skein.

.
Now, things can get tricky when you are using more than 2 skeins (for most garments).  Some people find the skeins are so different that they might need to knit with 3 balls.  So you’d have 2 skeins starting on one side and 1 skein starting on the other.  Some people start knitting with 2 balls and then when 1 ball is half gone they remove that ball and start knitting with a 3rd ball.  Then they go back to the 2nd ball when the 1st ball is done.

I hope I haven’t confused you.  It is easier than you think.  Plus, you spent all that money on beautiful hand dyed yarn.  You should really love the finished product!
.
